Cards from clinicians who knew our child – even if only briefly – make a big difference to parents, especially after the child has died. These cards help us in several ways: we know others are remembering our child; and we feel validated as parents. Indeed, hearing from a clinician that they saw us being loving, caring, devoted parents during such difficult times — and that we made good decisions on behalf of our child — makes SUCH a difference.
The example below was sent to CPN staffer Jennifer from a PICU nurse who tended Jennifer’s son Ben on his last day. The message from this nurse helped Jennifer feel that her decisions were good then; and reading it years later, it gives her peace in bereavement.
