Announcing the Ilene Beal Courageous Provider Award

Dear Network,

This is a time of year that is traditionally devoted to family, to gathering, to enjoying one another. For some of us this is a sad, or bittersweet, time; for others, it is a nourishing and happy time. We at Courageous Parents Network are thinking of you.

Courageous Parents Network has been working to deepen our relationship not just with families, but also with the providers on whose expertise and wisdom our families all rely. We are Courageous Parents Network for a reason– our mission is to empower families caring for children with serious illness. On the other hand, the physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, child life specialists and therapists are so much a part of our collective journey. In fact, many families regard the providers with whom they have worked so closely as members of the extended family. We have been feeling that this close relationship should be marked in some kind of meaningful way.

And so we are delighted and proud to announce the Ilene Beal Charitable Foundation Courageous Provider Award! Courageous Parents Network will present the inaugural award on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 to Patricia J. O’Malley, MD, Medical Director of the MassGeneral Hospital for Children Pediatric Palliative Care Service. With support from the Ilene Beal Foundation, the award includes a significant financial gift to the palliative care unit at MassGeneral Hospital for Children.

In honoring Pat, we recognize her dedication to seeing and treating the entire family unit with an eye to alleviating the physical and emotional pain, fear and isolation common to so many facing lifespan-limiting pediatric illness. Parents have told us that the powerful combination of her clinical acumen and sensitivity to the child’s and family’s needs has helped them face the unthinkable with hope and courage. It’s no coincidence that many stay in touch with her for years after their children leave her care. She truly makes a difference in how families cope and remember. One such family is the Siedman family, featured here on CPN with Dr. O’Malley discussing how they worked together for Ben’s care.

It seems fitting to share this happy news at this time of year. Please join me in thanking the Ilene Beal Charitable Foundation for their generous support, and in congratulating Pat!

And please stay tuned in 2019 for when we open nominations from parents in the Network for next year’s Awardee.

With best wishes to you and your family for a peaceful holiday and year end filled with many kindnesses,

All of us at Courageous Parents Network
