Kate, a mom of two sons born with cardiomyopathy, and her sons’ heart doctor, Dr. Elizabeth Blume, discuss the parents’ transition from being experts on managing their child’s condition before transplant to having to learn a whole new type of care. “It takes time to get your head around.”

MD: That expertise around their child is, it takes about six or seven months for most parents to again become the expert in their child.

Mom: I felt like I went from a somewhat competent mom and provider to a really needy mom. It’s another place where I think a lot of teamwork and communication is very important.”
