Ethicist and palliative care social worker Arika Patneaude says that health equity work is ‘internal work.’ The patient family doesn’t have a choice to enter a different system; they have to come to the hospital in a place of real vulnerability. It’s not their job to make clinicians feel OK or comfortable or liked. “It’s important that we not expect our patients and families to perform for us.”
